Regarding Fairies - A Field Study by Elder Mage Eldrin of Fayhaven
Some questions have emerged in recent years regarding the existence of certain beings (seemingly magical in nature), which I hope to lay to rest in this study. The chief source of information regarding these creatures has passed on, and until I may meet him again, I have taken it upon myself to record his findings and present evidence on the subject of Fairies.
Fairies, not to be mistaken with the more sinister creature which I shall not name with this pen, have been described as small, winged bipeds that take on a roughly humanoid (or elfin) appearance. The formerly mentioned expert in Fairy studies believed them to be difficult to see in daylight, and only really visible as a bright, miniscule luminescence by night. He suggested that their light is self-produced, and that they fly with the use of paper-thin wings which grow from their backs.
The recorded encounters that this Fairy expert, Bogdan the Gnome, experienced began with a purported abduction by night. His memory of the encounter and the details thereof often seemed tenuous at best. He claimed he danced the night away under the stars in some unidentifiable glen. Once, I heard him suggest that he had met with a regent that he could only describe as the “Fairy Queen.” Come morning, Bogdan said that he awoke in his moss-bed, unable to describe where he had been or how he had returned. Afterward, he became obsessed with proving the existence of these Fairies, but never produced any solid evidence.
At the time of Bogdan’s passing, the denizens of Fayhaven gathered to remember him, each in the manner of their own people. A number have purported the appearance of many glowing lights over the now-empty workshop of Bogdan. Perhaps it was a trick of the waning moonlight, or their vision was clouded by tears.
I fear that I cannot confirm the existence of Fairies, or prove these tenuous firsthand accounts. If any academy or authority on matters of the arcane were to question me, I must purport that Fairies remain only a theory.
However, there are those among us that subscribe, sometimes without reason or evidence, to believing in things that cannot be touched or heard. Things that, perhaps, may seem unrealistic or impossible to substantiate. Much like my passed friend, some yearn to have faith in the unseen things. Some of us want to believe.
